Exchange Arrangements #1

Exhibited in crosseXions @ Metro Arts Brisbane 2016

Exchange Arrangements #1 explores interactions between living beings and non-living matter, namely, indoor plants and common domestic building materials known to emit Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). The work uses as its starting point a 1989 NASA report, Interior Landscape Plants for Indoor Air Pollution Abatement, that identifies air-purification possibilities using plants in sealed environments, particularly space stations. Reflecting on contemporary earth-based habitation, Exchange Arrangements #1 considers the vitality of all cohabitants, living and non-living, to reveal unseen exchanges. Inspired by the "gossip seat", an all-in-one seat and table popular when telephones became commmonplace in the home, the furniture's construction materials are known to off-gas VOCs that the plants in the installation are particularly effective at removing.
